Fix Leaks to Prevent Water Damage
Did you know household leaks can waste nearly 1 trillion gallons of water annually nationwide? Take stock to protect your home from water damage by detecting and fixing leaks. Here are a few things you can do.
1. Look for signs of water damage.
When a pipe continues to leak, it can cause extensive damage to your home. Look for telltale signs of leaks like unusually high bills, mold or mildew, damaged walls or ceilings, or an unexplained odor.
2. Proactively check for leaks.
Minor leaks can pass undetected and cause significant damage. Check hoses that lead to your washing machine, dishwasher, and refrigerator annually. Experts recommend replacing all hoses every five to seven years.
3. Check the water heater.
Regular maintenance on your water will prevent water heater failure. The “sacrificial” anode rods on the heater are designed to divert corrosive elements away from the tank. Replace the rod at least once every two years. Also, flush your tank every six months to prevent sediment buildup.
4. Locate your water main.
If you experience a plumbing emergency inside your home, knowing where and how to shut off the water supply is important.
5. Inspect your roof.
Seal your roof to add an extra barrier against water. Replacing a roof can be expensive, so it’s essential to understand what your homeowners policy covers.
