Our History
1992
Dai-Tokyo Fire & Marine Insurance Company and Royal State Insurance Company establish DTRIC Insurance. The company name is a combination of the founding partners (Dai-Tokyo + Royal Insurance Co). DTRIC enters the market when most insurers were reluctant to offer automobile coverage in Hawaii due to rising claims costs and strict regulations created by the state’s no-fault law. With creative programs and solutions, DTRIC Insurance steps in to provide group automobile program for the state’s largest public employee union.
1994
DTRIC expands into commercial insurance lines in response to a severe downturn in the availability of general casualty and workers’ compensation insurance in Hawaii. DTRIC begins providing workers’ compensation coverage to many Hawaii businesses and working closely with clients on operational and safety issues. This step is instrumental in bringing stability to the local marketplace and reducing insurance costs.
2001
In April, majority owner Dai-Tokyo Fire & Marine Insurance Company merges with Chiyoda Fire & Marine Insurance Company to form a new company called Aioi Insurance Company, Limited. It is one of the largest property and casualty insurers in Japan. In July, DTRIC Insurance is renamed to DTRIC Insurance Company, Limited.
2010
October 1, Aioi Insurance Company and Nissay Dowa General Insurance Company merge to form Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Company, Limited (ADI). ADI and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company are subsidiaries of MS&AD Insurance Group, Japan’s largest insurance holding company and the eighth largest property and casualty insurance group in the world.
2016
In August, DTRIC launches its community initiative, Drive Aloha, to promote traffic safety to prevent senseless accidents and fatalities.
2017
DTRIC Insurance becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of ADI.
A new logo is unveiled to reflect the company’s new perspective. In Hawaii, mountains are valued for their protection against the elements, symbolize strength and longevity, and help create thriving, self-sustaining communities that prosper. The three graphic elements, which resemble mountains, represent DTRIC’s sources of strength: agency partners, customers, and employees.
2022
DTRIC celebrates its 30th anniversary.
