5 Tips to Prevent Drunk Driving Crashes
Each year the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign reminds drivers of the dangers of drunk driving. This year’s campaign runs from August 14 to September 2 with the support of local law enforcement to save lives by putting an end to drunk driving, showing zero tolerance.
A few sobering facts about driving under the influence:
- Nearly a third of traffic fatalities in the U.S. involved drunk drivers. In 2017, there were 10,874 people killed in drunk-driving crashes – that’s equal to about 20 jumbo jets crashing with no survivors.
- One person is killed about every 50 minutes by a drunk driver on our nation’s roads.
- Drug-impaired driving is an increasing problem. Driving while impaired by any substance is deadly and illegal.
- On average, a DUI can cost you $10,000 in fines, attorney’s fees court costs, lost time at work, higher insurance premiums, car repairs, and more.
- If you’re caught drinking and driving, you could face jail time. Try explaining that to your family, friends, and co-workers.
- Drunk driving can cause you to lose your driver’s license or your car.
- Most importantly, drunk driving could cost you your life or someone else’s.
Celebrations are a part of our island lifestyle, so plan ahead to keep your family and friends safe while enjoying the fun:
- If you plan to drink and drive, plan for a sober driver to take you home.
- If it’s your turn to be the designated driver, take that role seriously and don’t consume any alcoholic beverage, not even one.
- Download mobile apps to your phone that allow you to call a taxi or rideshare service if you’ve had too much to drink. You can always pick up your car the next day.
- If you’re hosting a party, be sure there are alcohol-free drink options, including festive “mocktails.” You can find delicious recipes created by some of Hawaii’s top mixologists for you try at DTRIC.com/mocktails.
- If you see a drunk driver on the road, call law enforcement immediately. You may prevent a potential accident and could save a life.
